The Power of the Hashtag
The all mighty hashtag is a Twitter and Instagram staple. It indicates a response to a topic, allowing millions of people to join a global conversation. On Instagram, users can follow hashtags which allows content to filter into the newsfeed along with followed users. Twitter is testing a similar feature so users can follow hashtags the same way. Why is this important? Let’s take a look at the fried chicken sandwich feud of 2019.
Yes, a fried chicken sandwich caused quite a social media stir. Popeyes challenged the reign of Chick-Fil-A when the Louisiana fried chicken chain restaurant came out with a competing fried chicken sandwich. While folks were filling establishments to taste the difference, both brands took to social media to battle it out online. Using the hashtag #ChickenSandwich multiple brands showcased their own take on the sandwich, knowing potential customers are following the hashtag eager for more drama.
Why Should You Use Hashtags?
This would be prime time to add your chicken sandwich (or thoughts on the meal) to gain traction. Like keywords, the content you hashtag will appear when someone searches for that topic on Instagram or Twitter. As previously mentioned, following hashtags is already a feature on Instagram.
Lets go back to the chicken sandwich fiasco for example, Wendy’s used this time to also stake their fried chicken sandwich’s claim as a strong competitor to Chick-Fil-A. Food publications used this time to boost recipes for homemade fried chicken sandwiches and articles about fast food, or fried chicken. This was the optimal time to see the hashtag in action.
The hashtag is the secret to success on Twitter and Instagram. Businesses especially can benefit from skimming through the daily trending hashtags or hashtags related to their field. See your content take flight with the right #hashtag.
